Chemical Peels

There are many different types of chemical peels available for facial rejuvenation and medical skincare. Our office is located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica and we specialize in tailored chemical peels to help improve skin quality and skin function. Dr. Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in the field of facial rejuvenation and skin health.  Chemical peels can improve skin tone, skin complexion, dark spots, melasma, acne, and facial aging (wrinkles, large pores, uneven skin complexion).

Choosing a Chemical Peel:

If you are considering a chemical peel or a laser for your skin, it is important to understand your options so that you can make an educated choice. There are many different types of skin procedures available to rejuvenate your skin. Chemical peels have been around for several decades and work by exfoliating the top layers of skin to improve skin quality and tone. The most recent advancements in laser technology have allowed for more choices when it comes to facial rejuvenation. Now more than ever, chemical peels and laser procedures go hand-in-hand to improve skin quality.  In our Santa Monica office, Dr. Karamanoukian will provide you with a comprehensive list of laser procedures and chemical peel options to improve skin tone, skin color, skin quality, improve wrinkles, shrink pores, reduce sebum and acne breakouts, and improve skin resiliency.

Glycolic Acid Peels:

Glycolic acid peels have been used for decades by dermatologists to improve skin tone and reduce active acne. The concentration of glycolic acid peels should vary depending on the thickness of your skin, the size of your pores, and the specific problem you wish to address. Glycolic acid peels have less downtime than deeper chemical peels and are often used for acne breakouts. In our office, we use many combination chemical peels that include glycolic acid as one of the main ingredients. In addition, patients who wish to undergo milder daily exfoliation may choose to use the Melapads as a daily exfoliation product to help eliminate excess sebum, reduce pigmentation, and smoothe skin.

Melapeel:

Deeper chemical peels are an excellent choice for deep acne scars or severe sun damage. However, the majority of our patients undergo frequent facial and body treatments with a lighter chemical peel known as a Melapeel. Unlike deeper peels, Melapeels primarily target pigment cells within the skin. Rather than peeling for a lengthy period of time, the Melapeel is well tolerated if you have a busy schedule.

Obagi Blue Peel:

The Obagi Blue Peel has seen many modifications since being introduced in the late 80s. The main acid used in a Blue Peel is a blue dye that helps physicians determine the depth of acid penetration within the skin.  The blue dye is very useful for medium to deep peels for deepset wrinkles and acne scars, because a skilled surgeon can vary the depth of treatment based on the particular area of the face being treated. Obagi Blue Peels contain TCA with varying concentrations ranging from a mild TCA 10% to a stronger TCA 35%.  Stronger concentrations of TCA may be unstable on application and may result in problems unless performed by a very skilled surgeon. In our office, Dr. Karamanoukian is a leading provider of Obagi Blue Peels and has experience in the variations of the Blue Peel as well as the treatment of complications arising from Obagi Blue Peels. He is a leading scar expert and can help improve skin quality and skin health after a chemical peel burn.

TCA Peel:

There are so many different types of acids that can be used for chemical peels.  Some acids are highly caustic, while others are more tolerable to the skin surface. TCA, or trichloroacetic acid, is an effective chemical acid peel that can be used as a superficial, medium-depth, and deep peel.  Superficial TCA peels help with acne and fine wrinkles; whereas medium and deep peels can address more specific skin concerns such as acne scars, wrinkles, and skin laxity.  Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert in TCA peels and can help modulate the peel to achieve maximum gain in skin quality.

A TCA peel can be performed in the clinic setting, or for medium to deep level peels, under local anesthesia or deeper anesthesia.  Although TCA peels are strong, they are well tolerated by patients and can help improve the skin. A typical medium to deep level TCA peel will take about one week to heal.  Exfoliation of the skin usually occurs on or about day 5 of the peel.

Melapads: At-home Daily Exfoliating Pads

Exfoliation is a very important part of skin rejuvenation. When the skin is exfoliating, the underlying skin is stimulated to regenerate new skin that is rich in collagen and elastin. In addition, exfoliation aids in combatting excessive sebum, unclogs pores, and reduces acne breakouts. Melapads Daily Exfoliating Pads provide an effective daily exfoliating treatment that can help you improve skin quality, texture, and tone. Formulated with a combination of glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and kojic acid, Melapads are used twice daily to help with signs of premature aging.

Melapads are ideal for premature aging of the skin. Formulated with glycolic and salicylic acid to help improve skin complexion, reduce pore size, and tighen skin
