Tattoo Removal

Our office has a full array of the most comprehensive laser treatments for cosmetic dermatology. We carry the Candela Trivantage system for tattoo removal and tattoo lightening.  Laser tattoo treatments are highly effective methods for tattoo removal.  Other options offered by Dr. Karamanoukian include surgical removal of tattoos, excision of tattoos, and dermabrasion techniques, although these are less often used in favor of laser tattoo removal.

There are many different options for tattoo removal that include chemical peels, salabrasion, dermabrasion, topical creams, surgery. Laser tattoo removal is fast becoming the most sought after tattoo removal treatment because of its effectiveness and low risk of scarring when compared to surgery or abrasion. Laser tattoo removal is a safe and effective treatment that can help you lighten or remove a tattoo from the skin. Unlike surgery or abrasion techniques, laser tattoo removal minimizes the risk of surgical scarring or hypertrophic scarring.

Tattoo Lightening:

Many of our patients have expressed a desire to lighten their tattoos rather than remove them altogether. Dr. Karamanoukian has developed a protocol that allows you to lighten an existing tattoo so that it is a less dominant feature of your skin. The process is known as tattoo lightening and can help you achieve your cosmetic goals without having to remove your tattoo.  In our Santa Monica office, we offer tattoo lightening treatments for men or women who want to alter or change a pre-existing tattoo or modify the edges to some degree. The process begins with a thorough consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian to learn about options for tattoo lightening or removal. Dr. Karamanoukian will then help you coordinate the laser tattoo removal sessions or laser tattoo lightening sessions.

Q: What is laser tattoo removal?

A: In our office, we use a highly specializes laser treatment known as the Trivantage that allows for the treatment of many tattoo colors in one session.  Laser tattoo removal works by vaporizing the particles of pigment in the tattoo with a laser beam.  The treatments hurt a bit, much like the pain you experienced when you had the tattoo in the first place. In our office, we perform both tattoo removal treatments to get rid of a tattoo or tattoo lightening treatments that help reduce tattoo color so that it looks lighter or can be covered up better with a new tattoo. Some of our patients just want one part of their tattoo removed for a particular reason, and that is a much simpler process.

Q: Is the laser tattoo removal system FDA Approved?

A: The laser system used at Kare Plastic Surgery is a top-tier laser and is FDA-Approved for tattoo removal. Further, Dr. Karamanoukian and his highly skilled staff are certified in laser treatments.  We do not treat our tattoo removal procedures like a factory line-up.  You will receive concierge service when you visit our state-of-the-art laser center located on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.

Q: Can I have Dr. Karamanoukian perform the laser tattoo removal treatment?

A: Dr. Karamanoukian and his trained clinical staff can perform tattoo removal. If you have a preference for Dr. Karamanoukian, please ask the front desk to schedule the session with him instead of a nurse. We are more than happy to accomodate your request.

Q: Can a tattoo be removed with just one laser tattoo removal session?

A: Typically, the laser beam can vaporize a segment of the pigment within the skin at any given time.  Although it is possible that lighter tattoos can lighten significantly with just one treatment, it is more likely that it will take a few treatments for the majority of the ink to vaporize.

Q: What tattoo colors can be treated with the laser?

A: Black, blue, and green tattoos are often easier to treat than yellow, white, and fluorescent colors.  Red tattoos are often more difficult to remove than black or blue tattoos.  Lighter shades can respond differently, depending on whether the tattoo artist used a primary color or diffused the color with white. Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert in laser tattoo removal treatments and can help guide you through the process. You will find that the entire process of tattoo removal is quite logical and controllable.

Q: How many laser tattoo removal treatments will it take to remove my tattoo?

A: It is difficult to estimate the number of sessions needed to remove your tattoo. Commonly, amateur tattoos take fewer treatments when compared to professional tattoos.  Some colors will absorb the laser beam much better than others, requiring less treatments overall.  In addition, lighter fades may require less laser tattoo removal sessions than full coverage tattoos.  Our clinicians have also found that older tattoos require fewer treatments than fresh tattoos. Most tattoos will require about ten to twelve treatments for optimal results.

Q: Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

A: Most patients find the tattoo removal process tolerable, especially since it is often less painful than the tattoo itself. Some locations on the face or body are likely more painful than others.  Needless to say, a tattoo removal treatment on the sole of the foot is likely more painful than the forearm. Our office utilizes top-tier FDA approved lasers to minimize your pain level and maximize results.

Q: What are some common side effects from laser tattoo removal?

A: The most common, but transient side effects from laser tattoo removal include a burning sensation, punctate bleeding, and some blistering of the skin. We would advise you to carefully follow post-laser instructions to facilitate healing.

Q: Is scarring possible after laser tattoo removal?

A: Patients with darker skin color may experience some lightening of the skin underneath the tattoo.  Because of this risk, our office utilizes a top-tier laser that minimizes the risk of permanent scarring. It is crucial that you carefully follow post-laser instructions and avoid any picking or scaffing of the blisters or scabs after the laser. Dr. Karamanoukian often employs a burn dressing to minimize discomfort and aid in healing.
