The popularity of facial fillers is a testament to the inevitable loss of facial fat that accompanies the aging process. As we age, we begin to lose crucial volume along the lower eyelids, cheeks, mid-face, and jawline. These areas of fat loss are accompanied by skin laxity and facial volume loss.

Although there are many different types of facial fillers on the market, some fillers are more likely to give you a natural look when compared to others. Volume plumpers such as Juvederm, Restylane, and Voluma can add crucial volume to the face, but sometimes they cause an over-filling effect that looks obvious.

Sculptra is in a class of stimulatory facial fillers that can naturally add volume to the face without plumping the soft-tissue. Sculptra works by stimulating natural collagen production by your body within the skin.  Formulated with poly-lactic acid, Sculptra is first injected into the deep soft tissue, causing a stimulation of collagen-producing fibroblasts.

In comparison to other facial fillers, Sculptra is preferred by both men and women who prefer a more natural and paced volume enhancement of the face. Results are seen within a few months as the stimulated collagen begins to even out areas of volume loss and improve deep folds on the face.

Sculptra is an FDA-approved volume filler for facial rejuvenation.

Benefits of Sculptra:

Sculptra is an excellent soft tissue filler to improve facial volume loss, deep wrinkles, and loss of skin elasticity in the face. It is a perfect cosmetic injectable for deep lines, nasolabial folds, deep temples, mid-face volume loss, and jawline enhancement. In our Santa Monica office, we use Sculptra along the lower eyelids and tear-trough to improve deep hollows underneath the eyes. For men, Sculptra is an excellent choice for jawline definition and structure.

Fine lines, deep lines, facial collagen loss, skin laxity, and facial hollowness can be dramatically improved with Sculptra injections that are spaced out over time. Sculptra also provides an effective complement to laser resurfacing, Ulthera, skin tightening procedures, and volume facial fillers.

Injectable Consultation:

Our Santa Monica plastic surgery office is located on upscale Montana Avenue and provides the most comprehensive treatment options available for skin tightening, facial rejuvenation, laser treatment, and volume fillers. Options for hyaluronic acid facial fillers (Juvederm and Restylane) and stimulatory fillers (Sculptra and Radiesse) are available.

Dr. Karamanoukian is an experienced cosmetic plastic surgeon who can provide you with comprehensive options for facial rejuvenation. During your consultation, your goals will be discussed with respect to available options for laser, non-laser, topical, injectable, RF, Ulthera, and surgical options.

Sculptra is ideal for men and women who desire a natural-looking improvement in facial rejuvenation.

Sculptra Treatments:

Unlike hyaluronic acid facial fillers, Sculptra must be constituted prior to injection. Several days before your treatment session, our clinicians will prepare your Sculptra by mixing it with a combination of sterile water and lidocaine. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane, on the other hand, come in pre-filled syringes that can be injected at any time off-the-shelf.

Prepare for about a one-hour session for Sculptra injections. We recommend that you come into our office about 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. Once the treatment plan is confirmed, we will discuss all risks and benefits of Sculptra, provide you with an informed consent, and numb your face with lidocaine cream. Our office will provide the topical lidocaine cream as it will maximize your comfort level during the treatment.

After injection, ice-packs are recommended to minimize bruising that occurs with any injection. Most patients will see an immediate improvement in age-related volume loss after injection. Most patients tolerate the Sculptra well and have little to no downtime after the procedure. Possible side effects include bruising, swelling, and skin redness that are all transient.

What to Expect After Sculptra:

The amount of Sculptra injected depends on the amount of soft tissue volume loss and the pace at which you want to improve your facial volume. Patients will experience some transient swelling and bruising followed by an immediate improvement in volume loss. Once the Sculptra incorporates into the soft tissue, the swelling will subside and will then be followed by a period of collagen stimulation that will likely take about 90 days. Results can last up to two years, but you may desire more volume enhancement with time.

Risks of Sculptra:

Sculptra Aesthetic is FDA approved and is safe for use on thinner areas of the face. Volume loss is improved with a gradual genesis of collagen within the deep dermis and soft tissue of the face. Complications associated with Sculptra are usually transient and include minor bleeding from the injection site, bruising, swelling, and redness of the skin. Allergic reactions are rare and lumpiness under the skin is rare when using the Sculptra Aesthetic protocol.  Dr. Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and can help you evaluate all risks and benefits associated with Sculptra.

Q: Is Sculptra FDA-approved?

A: Our office is a leading provider of Sculptra Aesthetic in Los Angeles.  Sculptra is FDA-approved for age-related volume loss on the face. Patients find Sculptra injections to be longlasting, well-tolerated, and effective.

Q: What is Sculptra Aesthetic?

A: Sculptra is different than hyaluronic acid fillers because it is not a volume plumper. Rather, Sculptra is injected into the soft tissue of the face to stimulate your body’s natural collagen. The results are excellent, as Sculptra stimulates your skin and soft tissue to make replenish its own collagen stores.

Q: Is Sculptra used for men and women?

A: Men and women have different patterns of facial aging, making both candidates for volume enhancement with Sculptra. Ideally, Sculptra is tailored to your specific cosmetic needs. Patients who have facial volume loss can benefit from Sculptra injection to the deep dermis and soft tissue.

Q: How long does Sculptra last?

A: Sculptra Aesthetic has been shown to last up to a year in patients with volume loss. We have found that our patients are pleased with the results of Sculptra and often desire more to further enhance their image.

Q: Will Sculptra hurt?

A: If you are concerned about injections to your face, rest-assured that our office will take every available step to minimize your pain and maximize your comfort. We are happy to provide you with topical lidocaine cream to apply prior to your injection. We also offer a cryo-spray that cools your skin with freezing air during your injection.

Q: How much downtime is there with Sculptra injections?

A: Most of the downtime associated with Sculptra is transient. Some bruising, swelling, and skin redness may occur but usually fades within a few days. Avoid aspirin or blood-thinning medications prior to injection.

Q: Is there any aftercare after Sculptra injections?

A: Ice packs and mild pressure with gauze are recommended after injection. If you are prone to bruising, you may consider using Plato’s Medicinals Bruise Balm after treatment. We ask that you gently massage the areas for about one week after injection.

Q: Can I return to work after Sculptra?

A: Sculptra is a facial volume stimulatory filler and we do not anticipate a lengthy recovery. Some patients may experience mild swelling and bruising, but this should resolve within a few days and should not compromise your early return to work.

Q: How much does Sculptra Aesthetic cost?

A: The cost of Sculptra will depend on the amount of product that is injected. In our office, we carefully tailor the amount of injection to your specific needs. We will be able to provide you with specific costs during your consultation.
