Onychomycosis is a common nail condition that is otherwise known as toenail fungus.  Toenail fungus can occur as a result of a common fungal infection entering the space under the toenail.  It is unknown how individuals acquire toenail fungus, but it is thought that it results from the use of public gyms, saunas, yoga centers, or swimming pools.  Treatment of onychomycosis has traditionally been through the use of topical creams or oral medications.  The limitation of topical creams is that there is limited uptake of the medicine through the nail bed into the space that is occupied by the fungus.  Further, the difficulty with  administration of oral medications for toenail fungus is the monthly monitoring of possible liver inflammation and possible complications associated with liver damage.  It is for these reasons that physicians have now to come to rely on a new technology for onychomycosis that uses a powerful laser to destroy the fungus underneath the toenail.  This toenail fungus laser can be performed on an outpatient basis with minimal recovery; and can effectively destroy the fungus that resides underneath the toenail. Treatments for  toenail fungus infection can also help with discoloration and brittleness of the nail.

Toenail fungus laser is performed at Kare Plastic Surgery and Skin Health Center and relies on advanced technology to destroy the fungus without harmful antibiotics or antifungals.  The options for laser treatment now obviate the need for extensive medication and the potential for liver toxicity.  If you are interested in the new laser for onychomycosis and toenail fungus, please call our office to schedule an appointment by calling (310) 998-5533.
