Cosmetic Breast Surgery: Breast Implants, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction, Breast Revision

Welcome to the practice of Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a board certified plastic surgeon and expert in cosmetic breast surgery.  Dr. Karamanoukian has built a robust practice based on his innovative approach to breast surgery, which maximizes surgical outcomes while minimizing scars.  He is well known for the short scar breast lift, short scar breast reduction, and minimal scar breast implant surgery.

Breast enhancement is one of the most gratifying cosmetic surgery procedures performed in our Los Angeles plastic surgery practice.  Moderm techniques for breast enhancement minimize post-surgical recovery and breast scars, and maximize the cosmetic appearance of the breasts.  Breast enhancement can be performed alone or in combination with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures including facial cosmetic surgery, liposuction, abdominoplasty, mini-abdominoplasty, and labiaplasty.  All procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and minor procedures can be performed under local anesthesia.

There are five main procedures for cosmetic breast enhancement and these will be discussed in depth in this website and during your consultation with Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, an expert in breast enhancement surgery.  The following list describes the four types of cosmetic breast surgery:

  1. Breast augmentation: the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for breast enhancement.
  2. Breast lift: Repositions the breast and nipple to a more perkier position.
  3. Breast reduction: Reduces the size and improves the overall shape of the breast.
  4. Combination breast augmentation and breast lift: Increases breast size and improves perkiness of the breasts.
  5. Male Gynecomastia Surgery

REVISION OF BREAST SCARS:  Breast scars can be formed from a number of different reasons, including cosmetic breast surgery such as breast augmentation or breast lift; breast mastectomy or lumpectomy scars; or from a breast reconstruction procedure.  The majority of scars on the breast can be revised using a refine surgical scar technique that minimizes tension of the wound and reduces the widened or thickened breast scars to a thinner line.  There are many reasons to undergo breast scar revision, especially if you are concerned about the cosmetic appearance of the breast skin with those existing scars.  Breast scar revision can remove or reduce the visibility of the scar along the areola, through the nipple, on the skin of the breast, or on the fold of the breast, the base of the inframammary crease.  Note all breast scar revisions are surgical.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in scar revision surgery and scar revision laser.  He employs the latest chemical peel, laser resurfacing, dermabrasion, scar reduction, IIT, and scar resurfacing options to minimize the look of the scar while at the same time minimizing the amount of surgery needed.  If you concern about breast scars from a breast augmentation, we have solution that can reduce the visibility of an areolar scar or inframammary scar to make it less noticeable compared to the surrounding tissue.  These scar revision procedures can be performed at the same time as a breast implant revision or can be staged early on years before a future breast revision procedure.  Breast lift scars can also be improved by minimizing the widening, redness, thickening of the vertical scar, the inframammary scar, or the areolar scar.  In may cases, these scar revision procedures can be performed at the same time as a redo or revision breast lift.  Finally, breast reduction scars can be improved dramatically by minimizing tension of the wound or scar and reducing hypertrophy and thickening of a breast reduction scar.  The patients who have undergone lumpectomy or mastectomy who are considering conservative breast reconstruction or no reconstruction at all can benefit from outpatient procedures to reduce the surgical scarring and improve the overall look of the breast.  Dr. Karamanoukian believes that breast scar revision can be performed without invasive surgery and in many cases these procedures are performed using local anesthetic while the patient is awake or under mild anesthesia.

BREAST LIFT SURGERY:  The objectives of a breast lift or mastopexy surgery are numerous, and collectively act to improve the contour of the female breast after weight loss, aging, and childbirth.  The following are true objectives of a breast lift:

  1. Reduce the droopiness of the breast and areola/nipple
  2. Raise the position of the nipple.
  3. Reduce the size of the areola. Known as areolar reduction.
  4. Improve breast symmetry (size, position)
  5. Increase, decrease, or maintain breast volume.

NIPPLE AND AREOLA SURGERY:  Breast development can lead to asymmetry of the breasts or an abnormal appearance of the breast tissue, including the nipples and areola.  A common complaint of some women is that on one side of their breasts, the nipple seem retracted or sucked in.  This is known as an inverted nipple and can be corrected with an outpatient surgery that releases tight fibrous tissue that is tethering the nipple from the inside of the breast.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in breast surgery.  He performs outpatient nipple surgery including inverted nipple correction in those patients who wish to regain confidence in the appearance of their breasts.  If you are considering inverted nipple surgery, our Los Angeles patient care coordinator can help you schedule an appointment for nipple correction.  In most cases, tight fibrous tissue or breast ducts interfere with the nipple's ability to become erect normally.  Men may also benefit from inverted nipple correction, but less commonly so.  The scars from inverted nipple correction are small and barely visible when completely healed.

Men who have inverted nipples, large nipples (prominent nipples), or full areola are often physically and mentally preoccupied by the appearance of the nipples and areola under t-shirts and clothes.  The fullness below the nipple and areola caused by glandular or fatty overgrowth of tissue may be a cause for concern in those patients, but gynecomastia surgery may be an option.  If you have inverted nipples and are concerned about the type of surgeries available for nipple overgrowth or inverted nipples in men, there are small outpatient procedures offered by Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian in the Los Angeles area to correct these minor breast problems. The most common reasons for men to seek or undergo outpatient consultations for nipple surgery include large or prominent nipples; and puffy areola caused by minor gynecomastia.  Prominent nipples can be corrected with outpatient surgery that reduces the projection and base diameter of the nipples while still maintaining nipple sensation.

MALE GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY: The male chest can be sensitized to hormones and developmental triggers, stimulating excess breast tissue to grow.  This growth of male breast tissue is known as gynecomastia.  Most cases of gynecomastia occur spontaneously, in the absence of health problems.   Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian performs gynecomastia breast tissue removal or gynecomastia surgery in order to improve the condition through plastic surgery.  In our Santa Monica plastic surgery office, a consultation will allow Dr. Karamanoukian to examine your breast tissue and determine the causative nature of the problem.  During surgery, excess breast tissue is removed through liposuction or surgical excision.
