What are lower eyelid bags? Lower eyelid bags are a common reason to seek blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery.  The lower eyelid fat bags are caused by an outpouching of orbital fat under the skin.  In most cases, this is a normal part of aging and Dr. Karamanoukian can reposition the lower eyelid fat to restore your natural look.

  • Are there non-surgical options for lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty? Yes, laser skin resurfacing can optimize the wrinkles underneath your eyes, but cannot correct the fat bags that cause eyelid aging.  For patients who have already had a blepharoplasty in the past or who do not have orbital fat bags, Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing is an outstanding non-surgical option.  If you do not know if you are a candidate for lower eyelid laser resurfacing, schedule a consultation with Santa Monica plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian by calling (310) 998-5533.   In addition, some patients may benefit from non-surgical options including Botox injections, Xeomin injections, facial fillers with Restylane, and fat transfer.

  • Can allergies lead to lower eyelid aging? Absolutely.  If you have lower eyelid fat bags, wrinkling, hollowness, or dark circles; and a personal history of seasonal allergies, they are most likely related.  Chronic inflammation and sinusitis can exacerbate and enhance aging of the lower eyelids.  Surgical blepharoplasty can help improve this problem.

  • Can I use creams to help treat undereye circles or dark circles around the eyes?  Yes.  Dark circles and undereye wrinkling can be improved with a combination skin protocol using the Melaquin Skin Brightening Complex and retinoids.  Dr. Karamanoukian can help tailor this topical regimen to your specific problem whether or not you are undergoing eyelid surgery.  If you are planning on undergoing lower eyelid surgery or are delaying the procedure for a while, the Melaquin dark circle protocol will help improve the look of your undereyes.

  • What type of anesthesia is used for eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty? Our Santa Monica plastic surgery office is accredited by the AAAHC and has a licensed surgical suite that is equipped for anesthesia.  Our expert team of six board certified anesthesiologists will help you through the process of surgery and will provide outstanding anesthesia in a professional, compassionate, and safe manner. If you are hesitant about general anesthesia, you will be pleased to know that the majority of eyelid surgeries are performed under local anesthesia.  Dr. Karamanoukian can provide you with details of his local anesthetic technique and his commitment to patient safety in surgery. • What are the options for lower eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty? Lower eyelid surgery can be performed through the eyelid skin or through the inner eyelid mucosa.  In either case, Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Karamanoukian will remove excess skin and fat from the lower eyelids and reposition the eyelid skin so that it improves skin tone.  The result is a natural looking eyelid and cheek junction.

  • How long does a typical eyelid surgery take to perform? Dr. Karamanoukian performs all of his eyelid surgeries in an accredited surgical suite with the utmost dedication to patient safety.  Most eyelid surgeries take between one to two hours and patients are discharged within one hour of surgery.  We ask that you make arrangements for a friend or relative to pick you up from our Santa Monica plastic surgery office after surgery.

  • What are the components of eyelid surgery? Lower eyelid surgery is composed of three different elements; namely the removal of excess skin, tightening of the muscles around the lower eyelids, and removal or repositioning of the orbital fat bags.  Dr. Karamanoukian will discuss which of the three, if not all, you will need to rejuvenate your lower eyelids.

  • What other types of surgery can be combined with an eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty?  Almost any other type of cosmetic surgery can be combined with a blepharoplasty, including liposuction, breast augmentation, breast enhancement, Mommy Makeover surgery, facelift, and rhinoplasty.  Dr. Karamanoukian often performs fat grafting with eyelid surgery to enhance the smile lines and cheeks after surgery.

  • How long is recovery after eyelid surgery? Recovery depends on a number of different factors, including how prone someone is to bruising and swelling.  Typically, patients can return to normal activities and work within 5 to 7 days of the surgery.  Resumption of normal daily activities begins about two days after surgery.  Makeup is a great option to cover up the bruising.  In addition, our office recommends Bruise-Pak supplements after surgery to reduce the time to complete resolution of bruising and swelling.

  • How can I schedule a consultation for eyelid surgery in Los Angeles? If you are considering eyelid rejuvenation with non-surgical laser resurfacing, Melaquin Eyelid Protocols, Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, schedule a comprehensive one-on-one consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian by calling our office at (310) 998-5533.
