How does an eyelid lift improve peripheral vision?

An eyelid lift is also known as a blepharoplasty.  Patients who have excessive hooding and heaviness of the upper eyelid may also have a loss of peripheral vision on upward gaze.  An upper eyelid blepharoplasty can provide improvement in peripheral vision by removing excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid.  An upper eyelid procedure is often covered by medical insurance if there is a documented loss in peripheral vision associated with heavy eyelids and heavy brows.  The major functional benefit of a blepharoplasty is to improve visual loss in a peripheral field as a function of heavy eyelid.

How long do suture remain after blepharoplasty procedures?

A blepharoplasty procedure is performed on an outpatient basis for cosmetic or functional reason.  Patients who have excessive eyelid hooding and heaviness in the upper eyelids may benefit from a blepharoplasty surgery performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

During the surgery, small sutures are placed along the upper eyelid skin in order to suture the area of the skin and fat removal.  Sutures are typically removed within five days after the procedure, but Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will decide on a shorter or longer duration for the sutures depending on individual patient characteristic.

Is bruising associated with a blepharoplasty procedure?

It is not uncommon for patients to develop bruising along the eyelid area after blepharoplasty procedures.  Patients are advised to apply cold compresses, ice, and gentle pressure to the operated areas after surgery.  Depending on individual patient characteristic, it is not uncommon to develop bruising and swelling of the eyelid after surgery.  If you have questions about your bruising or swelling, scheduled a prompt followup appointment or contact our office to schedule a followup visit.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will also prescribe Arnica supplements, Bromelin supplements, and provide you with ways to optimize your healing time.
