What are the differences between spider and varicose veins?

Learn more about Varicose Veins and Spider Veins:

Vein surgeons diagnose spider and varicose veins by measuring the size, overall length, thickness, and bulginess of a vein to determine whether it is classified as a spider vein or varicose vein.  Spider veins are typically smaller blood vessels under the skin and are sometimes referred  to as thread veins because they resemble the diameter or width of a single piece of thread.  Spider veins can occur as an isolated blood vessel under the skin or may show up as a cluster of spider veins resembling a branching tree.  Varicose veins, on the other hand, are bigger bluish bulging veins that appear on the legs and thighs.

Often varicose veins are a sign of an underlying vein condition known as venous insufficiency.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is an expert on varicose veins and spider vein treatment and will help determine whether your vein is purely cosmetic or a combination of cosmetic and medical.  If you have questions related to spider or varicose vein care, please feel free to call our office at 310-998-5535.
