How are lipomas different than cysts?

Lipomas and skin cyst can appear very similar under the skin.  Healthy adult men and women can both develop skin cyst and lipomas under the skin as a result of unknown and unpredictable factors.  The difference between a lipoma and a cyst depends on not only the clinical presentation, but the underlying cause of the subcutaneous nodule.  A lipoma is a collection of fat cells that forms a clump under the skin and is first noticed as a tiny moveable lump underneath the skin surface.  A cyst on the other hand appears the same, but is formed by a collection of keratin or sebaceous material in a fat that is likely derives from an old pore or skin gland.  The removal of both skin cyst and lipomas should be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon who can minimize surgical scarring and maximize the chance for complete removal of either structure.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian at Kare Plastic Surgery is an expert in both lipoma removal and cyst removal in the Los Angeles area.  Recognizing the underlying cause of the subcutaneous nodule is important in determining the type of surgery to perform, as there are slight modifications in technique used for lipoma removal versus cyst removal.  Dr. Karamanoukian performs surgery in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica and sees patients from the Los Angeles area as well as the Greater Southern California areas.
