Can keloid scars occur in all ethnic types? Los Angeles keloid scar surgeon

Can keloid scars occur in all ethnic types?

A common misconception about keloid scars is that they only occur in African American patients or patients of African descent.  However, genetic factors and common patterns in development of keloids are prominent throughout all ethnic groups, resulting in keloid formation in Asians, African descent, Caucasians, and Native Americans.  All ethnic groups can develop keloid scars and hypertrophic scars resulting from active acne, previous surgery, surgical biopsies and procedures, and trauma.  Keloids are caused by a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors that can affect wound healing and inflammation.

If you are concerned about a history of keloid scars in your family and have developed keloid on your back, chest, arms or legs, or face, our expert team of clinicians can help solve your keloid problems.  Dr. Karamanoukian will first examine you during your keloid consultation in Los Angeles and determine whether your particular needs require surgery or nonsurgical options.  We recommend initiation of topical therapy as soon as possible, including Plato's Scar Serum and Plato's Dark Scar Corrector as part of the Plato's Scar Therapy Mini Kit.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery and keloid scar revision in Los Angeles.  He performs plastic surgery in both Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. Please call (310) 998-5533 to schedule an appointment for keloid scar revision.
