Is it true that breast implants can cause an increased risk of breast cancer? Los Angeles Breast Surgeon

Is it true that breast implants can cause an increased risk of breast cancer?

Breast implants, whether saline or silicone, have not been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.  The patients with cosmetic breast implants from the saline or silicone can benefit from a cosmetic improvement in the overall volume of the breast, but long term studies have showed no correlation with increased breast cancer risk or precancerous risk with the use of mammary prosthesis.  When a female undergoes breast augmentation, routine mammography and breast screening exams are recommended for basic screening for breast cancer.  The patients with increased family risk factors may also benefit from a breast MRI.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a specialist in breast augmentation using saline or silicone breast implants and can help you decide your individual risk for breast cancer with or without breast implants.  The submuscular placement of breast implant does not impair visualization of mammography and has been shown not to increase any breast cancer risk in healthy female individuals.  If you have questions about breast implants and your individual risk for breast cancer with breast implants, a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian will help you determine whether augmentation mammoplasty is appropriate for you.  Dr. Karamanoukian offers consultation for cosmetic breast surgery, breast enhancement, breast lifts, and combination breast lifts and augmentation in his Los Angeles plastic surgery office.
