What incisions are used for breast augmentation? Kare Plastic Surgery in Los Angeles

Incisions for breast augmentation can be placed in several locations depending on the size and dimensions of your breast and chest wall.  Incisions are placed on the axilla, around the areola, and along the inframammary crease.  These three incisions types are the most common for silicone and saline breast implants, however there are other options including umbilical and inframammary using a mastopexy scar.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is an expert in breast augmentation with saline and silicone breast implant and can help you tailor the incision that best suits your breast shape and size.

The decision to undergo a specific incision pattern with breast augmentation can make a significant difference in the overall appearance of the breast and the appearance of the scar after surgery.  Specific breast implant incisions are used to access areas of the breast.  For example if there is a need to develop cleavage along the breast, and a periareolar incision is often more appropriate than an axillary for umbilical incision.  The periareolar incision provides direct access to the medial pectoralis muscle fibers and can be used to develop enhance cleavage along the midline of the breast.  In our Los Angeles plastic surgery office, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian employs all modalities of breast implant incisions, thereby tailoring the incision type to your specific breast width, breast dimension, and chest width.  Most incision types have minimal impact on breastfeeding and nipple sensitivity.

Dr. Karamanoukian can review the risk of breast implant capsular contracture, loss of nipple sensitivity, and loss of lactation abilities with each incision site.  Overall, the periareolar incision is often used to minimize the appearance of the scar in patient who does not have a significant inframammary fold.  Please call the office of Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian at 310-998-5533 and speak to one of our cosmetic surgery patient care coordinator about the different incision patterns for breast augmentation.  Our office can help you schedule a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian regarding silicone or saline breast implants.
