Neck liposuction questions and answers - Kare Plastic Surgery board certified surgeon in Los Angeles - Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian

Neck liposuction

The neck, jawline, and chin areas may be one of the first areas to show weight gain.  These areas of unwanted fat can accumulate rapidly along the neck areas and may be the last areas to thin out with weight loss.  Men and women who have unwanted fat along the chin and neck line are often concerned that the definition of the jaw and neck are lost because of an accumulation of fat.  Neck fat may also contribute to premature aging and a outpatient procedure known as neck liposuction can safely remove and recontour the fat along the chin and neck areas in order to rejuvenate the face.  Neck liposuction is performed as an outpatient procedure under tumescent anesthesia and can dramatically improve the appearance of the face.

A description of neck liposuction

Liposuction of the chin and neck areas can safely remove fat using tiny incisions that are used to suction fat using small cannulas.  These liposuction cannulas are attached to a suction device that gently removes the fat from the neck area and helps recontour the jawline and neckline.  The procedure begins with administration of a local anesthetic to numb the skin and areas of fat.  The local anesthetic is administered using a tumescent technique which involves a very dilute concentration of numbing medication and a vasoconstrictor.  Once the area is numbed, a small incision is made in a well hidden area and a liposuction cannula is inserted into the areas of fat in order to suction out and remove the unwanted adipocytes.  Once the appropriate contour is established, several small stitches are placed on to the incision site and the neck is wrapped using an elastic bandage.  Immediately after surgery, the skin redrapes along the new neck contour line and the healing process begins.  Neck liposuction can be performed in patients who have good skin resiliency and elasticity.  The patients who have poor skin tone may not benefit from skin retraction and may need a neck lift to tighten and remove excess skin.  During your consultation for neck liposuction, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian will evaluate your chin and neck area to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for liposuction or a neck lift.  The amount of fat along the neck area is less important than the overall tone of the skin.

How do I know if neck liposuction is appropriate for me?

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in facial cosmetic surgery. He performs all aspects of facial cosmetic rejuvenation including laser skin tightening, face lift surgery, and neck lift surgery.  The patients who request neck liposuction benefit from a comprehensive evaluation of the skin, muscle fascia, and bony structure of the face in order to determine which ideal treatment should be utilized for the neck.  The consultation will include basic information about the recovery after the pre and postoperative regimen as well as your expected timeframe for recovery.

Are there procedures that can be combined with neck liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a simple outpatient procedure that is often combined with other face lift procedures or body contouring procedures.  It is not uncommon for patients to request complementary procedures such as Botox injection, facial skin tightening using the fractional CO2 laser, lip augmentation, volume fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse.

What type of anesthesia is needed for neck liposuction?

Most patients will benefit from local anesthesia with tumescent technique for the neck liposuction procedure.  If requested, Dr. Karamanoukian performs surgery in an outpatient operating room and can employ a board certified anesthesiologist to administer twilight anerethisia, conscious sedation, IV sedation, or general anesthesia for your procedure.  Depending on the complexity of the neck liposuction and other complementary procedures, Dr. Karamanoukian will advise you on the different anesthesia options.  Anesthesia with neck liposuction is invariably successful and the patients note very little discomfort once the anesthesia has set in.

What is the recovery after neck liposuction?

The patients are asked to wear a neck compression bandage for approximately one to three days after the procedure.  If you have a tight recovery timeline, Dr. Karamanoukian will request that you wear the neck garment for the first 48 hours.  There is usually very little discomfort after the neck liposuction procedure, and the patients are able to resume normal activities within hours after their procedure.  However, Dr. Karamanoukian will recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise or strenuous activities for at least one week after surgery.
