How are vein valves related to varicose veins? Santa Monica Vein Center

How are vein valves related to varicose veins?

The veins in your legs and thighs are responsible for bringing oxygen poor blood back from the muscles of the legs and thighs back to the heart to be reoxygenated.  The process of returning blood back to the heart is regulated by a series of vein valves which acts as one way door to push blood from the lower legs to the heart.  As a result of occupation, the level of aerobic activity, physical exertion, pregnancy, hormonal influences, and family history, vein valves can become floppy and can cause abnormal dilation or swelling of a varicose vein segment.  Once this occurs, varicose veins begin to develop as the vein dilates and become more tortuous.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian specializes in the management of abnormal varicose veins in the legs and thighs and can provide you with a thorough evaluation and management plan for your vein problems.  Spider veins and varicose veins are now simple problems that are solved with minor outpatient procedures that require minimal anesthesia or surgery.  Please call our Los Angeles vein surgery patient care coordinator to determine whether newer laser based spider vein and varicose vein options are applicable in your case.
