Liposuction has been around for about thirty years.  Advancements in liposuction have allowed plastic surgeons to minimize risks with liposuction and ‘tumescent liposuction’ is a method whereby a solution of saline, numbing medication, and epinephrine are used as an anesthetic fluid.  The tumescent solution minimizes pain and also minimizes the amount of blood loss and bruising associated with liposuction.  Most liposuction performed in the United States is done with tumescent solution.

  6. Is bruising a normal part of liposuction? Most patients will have some bruising after liposuction and this usually subsides within one week of surgery.  There are ways to minimize bruising with liposuction, such as avoidance of over the counter blood thinners such as ibuprofen and aspirin.  Remember that the effects of aspirin and ibuprofen stay in your body for weeks, so avoid these medicines for two to three weeks before your procedure.  If you have taken them, simply tell Dr. Karamanoukian during your preoperative appointment.  Our office also recommends using Bruise-Pak supplements prior to surgery to reduce pain and swelling associated with the liposuction.
  7. Can I take Arnica Montana prior to liposuction? Absolutely.  Our office recommends the brand Bruise-Pak for cosmetic surgery because it is chewable and has easy-dosing.  In addition, Bruise-Pak has a more standardized dose of Arnica Montana that makes it suitable for larger cosmetic plastic surgery procedures.
  8. When can I begin exercising again after my liposuction? Dr. Karamanoukian recommends at least two follow-up visits before resuming strenuous exercise and sports activities.  You can restart a basic aerobic regimen within one week of surgery and strenuous yoga or sports about two to three weeks thereafter.
  9. Will liposuction treat my cellulite? Liposuction will improve cellulite to some degree, depending on how severe the cellulite is.  Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert in cellulite treatment and will likely recommend the Brazilian Cellulite Treatment that he developed or Endermologie, a cellulite program developed in France.
