Frequently asked questions about keloids - Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian - Kare Plastic Surgery in Santa Monica

What are keloids?

Keloids are thickened scars that occur on the face and body as a result of an accelerated and enhanced fibroblast reaction that deposits excessive amounts of scar tissue into a wound.  For the majority of people with keloids, they can be a physical problem with associated pain and discomfort.  Keloids are often thickened and grow above the plane of the skin, resulting in abnormal appearance of a healed scar.  The most common location for keloids includes earlobe, chest, jawline, back, arm, and legs.  All of these different types of keloids have a similar pattern of growth and Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a board certified expert in keloid surgery, can help you manage your keloid problem with a combination treatment program that employes laser, intralesional injections, and surgery.

How long does keloid surgery take to perform?

There are similar patterns with keloid scars of the patient’s body, but no keloids are alike.  They have variable phases of growth and development with variable platau phases.  Keloid surgery is a definitive treatment that can effectively remove the keloid in the scope one to two hours.  Most keloid surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis with patient being discharged home after the surgery.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in keloid management.  He performs keloid surgery in an accredited operating room under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the keloid scars.  Although keloid surgery can effectively remove keloid scars from the body, they cannot prevent recurrence.  There is a high degree of recurrence with keloid surgery and keloid treatment, unless multimodality treatments are used as recommended by Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian.
