What is the difference between an atrophic and hypertrophic acne scar?

Acne scars are classified as atrophic or hypertrophic depending on the amount of collagen contained within the acne scar.  Acne scars can occur on the face and body and can cause severe embarrassment and physical changes on the skin.

If you have acne scars in the Los Angeles area and wish to have acne scar correction or acne scar revision, please call our Los Angeles plastic surgery office at 310-998-5533.

Kare Plastic surgery offers comprehensive laser acne scar revision and surgical acne scar revision for treatment atrophic and hypertrophic acne scars.  Atrophic acne scars results from a loss of dermal collagen and are usually hollowed out scars that are characterized by their depth to width ratio.  These scars are treated by Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, who characterizes acne scars based on their morphology.

Atrophic acne scars can be classified as ice-pick acne scars, box-car acne scar,s valley acne scars, and rolling acne scars.  Hypertrophic acne scars are caused by an overabundance of collagen that causes a scar to be raised or thickened.  Hypertrophic acne scars or keloid acne scars can occur on the jaw area as well as the shoulders and back.  These acne scars can be hyperpigmented and darken and are amenable to laser resurfacing, topical creams with Melaquin Skin Lightening Cream, or acne surgery.  To schedule a consultation with our Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, please call our office at 310-998-5533.
