Treatment of melasma also known as skin discoloration - Santa Monica Plastic Surgery

Treatment of Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that occurs in healthy adults females.  Other terms for melasma include chloasma and skin discoloration.  Melasma shows up as bilateral and asymmetric skin discoloration on the face neck and upper extremities. The exact mechanism of melasma formation is unknown.  However, it is thought that family history of melasma may contribute to an increase susceptibility to UV exposure and elevated estrogen and progesterone.

Melasma was most commonly associated with pregnancy, but with the popularity of birth control pills, oral contraceptive has become the most common contributing factor to the development of melasma.  The patients who have melasma may note a progressive skin discoloration on the upper lip, cheeks, forehead, nose, and neck areas.  The severity of the melasma usually increases seasonally with more sun exposure in the spring and summer times.  Unfortunately melasma does not spontaneously disappear with the avoidance of sun or the cessation of birth control pills.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a proponent of long term melasma treatment using topical creams.  Our office recommends the Melarase AM Daily UV Protect with SPF 30 and Melarase PM night moisturizer for the control of melasma and skin discoloration of the face.  Melasma topical treatments are used twice daily for the control and reversal of skin discoloration on the face.
