Can atrophic acne scars be treated with chemical peels? Plastic Surgeon in Los AngelesDr. Raffy Karamanoukian - Ch

Acne Scar Treatment in Santa Monica

Atrophic acne scars and depressed acne scars can cause a contour deformity on the surface of the skin.  Acne scars can occur on the face and the body and cause problems with skin contour and skin complexion.  Often these acne scars can be associated with skin discoloration and skin darkening.  Acne scars can be treated with topical creams and chemical peels, in addition to laser surfacing, RF Sublation, and acne surgery.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a Santa Monica plastic surgeon, performs acne scar revision for treatment of acne for all types of acne scars.

The mainstay of treatment in our office is the Melarase creams (Melarase AM and Melarase PM) and Melapads to remove skin discoloration and even up skin tone.  These creams can be used to even the skin tone and improve the overall quality of the skin.  Melarase creams can improve skin quality and can reduce the appearance of dark acne scars. In addition chemical peels are used in our office, including TCA, Glycolic, Lactic Acid, phenol, Jessner's, and Salicylic peels to improve the quality of acne scarred skin.  Chemical peel helps exfoliate skin and remove dead impurities from the skin and pore surface.  In doing so, the skin can be refreshed and the surface of the skin improves.  Deeper chemical peels can be used for the treatment of deeper acne scars, depending on the depth of acid penetration within the skin.  Chemical peels have variable downtime with some patients having one to two days of light peeling whereas others have seven to ten days off deep peeling and redness.  For a chemical peel in Los Angeles, please call our office at 310-998-5533.

Our office also utilizes the Syneron Ematrix treatment for acne scars. Ematrix uses a technology known as sublative RF, in which energy is delivered to the middle to deep dermis in order to stimulate collagen production. We have found Ematrix to be very well tolerated and have seen excellent short and longterm results. Ematrix Sublation uses RF energy in a fractional format to help improve skin contour, atrophic skin, and deep acne scars. The main benefit of Ematrix is that it does not require significant downtime or recovery when compared to other lasers such as fractional CO2, Fraxel, and laser resurfacing.

Questions and answers about keloids: Los Angeles keloid expert discusses options for keloid treatment

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT KELOIDS: LOS ANGELES KELOID EXPERT

What are the best treatments for keloids?

Keloid scars are caused by a hyperstimulation of the fibroblast cells within the skin.  They can be caused by trauma, dermal injury, or chronic inflammation on the face and body.  The majority of keloid scars begin as a small inflamed nodule that gradually begins to expand and thicken about the plane of the skin.  There is no ideal procedure for keloid treatments as the treatment option depends on the size of the keloid and the amount of inflammation inherent in the keloid scar.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is an expert on keloid treatments and performs keloid surgery and nonsurgical keloid therapy on keloid of the ears, chest, and body.  The most common keloid are along the ear lobule as a result of ear piercing or along the chest and shoulders as a result of acne.  The best treatment for keloid is multimodality which treats various aspects of the keloid scars including inflammation and scar deposition.  Dr. Karamanoukian uses a combination of laser keloid treatment, injectional keloid therapy, IIT, and pressure management.  Dr. Karamanoukian is world renown for his expertise in keloid surgery and can provide you with full details regarding his unique approach to keloid management.  He is an experienced and trusted expert in keloid surgery.  To schedule a consultation for keloid surgery, call our Los Angeles plastic surgery care coordinator at 310-998-5533.  Our office will help facilitate your out of town consultation or local consultation in Los Angeles.  Dr. Karamanoukian performs surgery in both Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.

Is laser an effective treatment for keloid scars?

There are several different types of laser treatments that are available for keloid scars.  Keloids are caused by a stimulation of the fibroblast cell within the dermis of the skin and can result in thickened and inflamed scars that are raised above the plane of the skin.  The management of keloid scars has historically been conservative due to the high recurrence rate.  However laser keloid management has shown promise in decreasing the onset and recurrence rate of keloid scars on the face and body.  The most common areas for keloid scars are the earlobes, face, chest, and shoulders.  However keloid scars can occur on all different parts of the body.  If you live in the Los Angeles area and are concerned about keloid scars on the face or body, laser therapy provides an excellent modality for treatment.  Please call our Los Angeles plastic surgery patient care coordinator at 310-998-5533 to schedule your comprehensive consultation and treatment plan for keloid scars.  Dr. Karamanoukian is a board certified plastic surgeon and offers consultation for keloid scars in Los Angeles.

Can keloid scars be removed by surgery alone?

Keloid scars are notorious for their high recurrence rate. The usual onset of keloid scars result from tissue injury or skin injury resulting in fibroblast stimulation.  The management of keloid scars is consistent of laser keloid therapy, surgery, IIT, Kenalog injections, and pressure management.  For patients who have undergone keloid treatment in the past, there are new options including laser management that can help decrease the onset and duration of keloid scars.  The management of keloid scars with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a board certified plastic surgeon practicing in Los Angeles is through the use of multimodality therapy which includes combination treatment plans.  Due to the high recurrence rate after keloid treatment, surgery alone is unlikely to result in long term management.  A combination of pressure management, intralesional injection, and laser therapy will minimize recurrence after surgery.

Dr. Karamanoukian is available for consultation for keloid surgery by calling 310-998-5533.  Our Los Angeles plastic surgery patient care coordinator will be happy to help you schedule a comprehensive consultation for scar revision in our Santa Monica Clinic.  If you are concerned about the recurrence rate of keloids, Dr. Karamanoukian will advise you on a long term plan for keloid management.

Are steroid injections painful for keloid scars?

Keloid scars are caused by an inflammatory wound milieu that causes a recurrence and hyperstimulation of the inflammatory wound cycle.  As a result, keloid scars can often be painful, causing discomfort and itching along the periphery of the scar.  Intralesional injections are usually performed with cortisone and are completed using a small needle which provides intralesional administration of the cortisone injection.  In most cases, the initial phase of keloid scars involved pain and discomfort and this is generally improved with the keloid injections.  However the patients are often wary of the keloid injections because during administration there is some mild discomfort during the injection.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon practicing in Los Angeles and provides many options for scar revision.  If you are concerned about the pain associated with keloid injections, he can offer you laser treatment to decrease the size and severity of the keloid scars.  Not all patients can tolerate keloid injections and there are several mechanisms to relieve pain and discomfort associated with the procedure.  In some cases, Dr. Karamanoukian will even perform cortisone injections under mild sedation.  Dr. Karamanoukian is a trusted and experienced leader in keloid scars and can provide you with many options for keloid scar improvement.  Intralesional injections and cortisone injections are ideal for the management of the keloid scars.  However if you are concerned about your long term treatment plan, Dr. Karamanoukian can help accommodate your concerns and help you maintain a long term strategy for keloid scars.  Please call our Los Angeles plastic surgery patient care coordinator to schedule a comprehensive consultation for scar revision.  Dr. Karamanoukian is available for consultation Monday through Saturday in our Los Angeles office.  Call 310-998-5533 to schedule your consultation.

Some of the traditional methods to treat keloid scars include intralesional injections, pressure management, surgery, and IIT.  Many of these treatment options are still available today and can provide you with a long term strategy for keloid management.  Surgery is not the first option for many patients with keloid scars and there are many non-surgical options which can provide you with long term success for keloids.  Dr. Karamanoukian is an expert in keloid management and is recognized as a world leader in the management of keloid scars.  Keloids have a high recurrence rate and multimodality therapies can actually improve your long term success.  If you live in the Los Angeles  and are concerned about your keloid scars, please call our office at 310-988-5533 and one of our patient care coordinators can help schedule a consultation for keloid scar removal.  Our offices are concerned about your long term success with keloid scars as early treatment may prevent long term sequela from keloid scars.
