What is a hanging columella when discussing rhinoplasty surgery? Rhinoplasty Expert - Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, MD.

A columella is an important aesthetic unit on the nose.  It defines the area between the nostrils and it is the piece of cartilage and skin that is contained within the fingers between the two nostrils.  After rhinoplasty surgery there may be a condition known as a hanging columella in which the columella is protruding and hanging below the nostrils.  A hanging columella occurs after rhinoplasty surgery and can occur from under resection of the columellar cartilage or from over resection of the alar cartilage that defines the nostril rim.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and an expert in rhinoplasty surgery and secondary revision rhinoplasty surgery in Los Angeles.  He performs outpatient cosmetic plastic surgery in Beverly Hills and Santa Monica and applies meticulous surgical technique for refinement of a nasal contour.  The patient with hanging columella or retracted nostrils after rhinoplasty can consider a revision procedure to improve the aesthetic contour of the nostrils and the nasal base after surgery.  Often the presence of a hanging columella or retracted nostril can make the nostrils appear overly exposed and they dry the nasal mucosa.  During your consultation for revision rhinoplasty with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, he will begin with a thorough physical examination and determine what aspect of the nasal cartilage, nasal skin, and nasal bone will have to be recontoured or corrected in order to achieve a more harmonious aesthetic contour.  If there is an isolated hanging columella with redundant nostril or septal cartilage, correction of hanging columella may be a simple outpatient procedure.  Please call our office at 310-998-5533 to discuss your options for revision rhinoplasty, corrected rhinoplasty, or correction of hanging columella or nostrils.  We will be happy to facilitate a consultation with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian; a Los Angeles based plastic surgeon who specializing in revision rhinoplasty and rhinoplasty surgery.

Natural Septoplasty Los Angeles, Top Rhinoplasty Surgeon Los Angeles, Board Certified Rhinoplasty, Los Angeles

A septoplasty procedure is performed to improve the septum of the nose and improve breathing in patients who have nasal obstruction.  Septoplasty procedures are performed in combination with rhinoplasty or may be performed alone as a functionally necessary nasal procedure.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a specialist in nasal surgery and performs septoplasty and rhinoplasty procedures.  In combination these two procedures are known as a septorhinoplasty.  During the procedure, a portion of the deviated septum is removed or repaired in order to eliminate obstruction of the nostril airway.  Procedures for airway obstruction, including septoplasty and turbinate reduction, can also be covered by medical insurance.  Reasons for undergoing surgery include deviation of the dorsum as well as functioning nasal airway obstruction.

The medical portion of a septoplasty is often covered by the insurance and our office will provide you with information and help in obtaining preauthorization for insurance base septoplasty in Los Angeles.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a double board certified plastic surgeon and expert in primary and secondary rhinoplasty procedures.  Please call our office at 310-998-5533 to schedule your appointment for septoplasty or rhinoplasty in Los Angeles.

How can I correct a droopy tip during rhinoplasty? Plastic surgeon in Los Angeles specialist in rhinoplasty - Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian

Correction of a droopy nasal tip during rhinoplasty?

The specific aspects of a rhinoplasty procedure will vary from patient to patient and from plastic surgeon to plastic surgeon.  During your consultation with Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, he will examine your nose from several different prospective in order to determine the type of rhinoplasty that is best suited for your nose.  A droopy tip is an important anatomic problem that can be addressed during standard rhinoplasty surgery.  The tip of the nose is usually defined by the nasal tip cartilage found within the structural support of the nose.  In these cases, the nasolabial fold is usually acute, leading to a droopy appearance of the nasal tip.

During your surgery, Dr. Karamanoukian will examine the lower lateral cartilage of the nose to determine the degree of cartilage reset and cartilage molding that is necessary during your rhinoplasty surgery.  A droopy tip can be turned upwards and sculpted using careful intracartilaginous and intercartilaginous suture placement.  During your surgery, Dr. Karamanoukian will carefully sculpt your nasal tip in order to re-proportion the angles of the nose.  If you have questions regarding rhinoplasty surgery in Los Angeles or the correction of a droopy nasal tip, please call our cosmetic plastic surgery patient care coordinator at 310-998-5533.

Can my breathing improve after revision rhinoplasty? Top Plastic Surgeon in Los Angeles

Will breathing improve after revision rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is designed to improve the cosmetic appearance of the nose after a previous nose surgery.  In some patients, the functional aspects of the nose are addressed during a revision rhinoplasty noted to improve breathing.  Breathing may be impaired as a result of a deviated septum, permanent hypertrophy, internal nasal valve prolapse, or vestibular stenosis.  In many of these cases, Dr. Karamanoukian will address the key features of your internal and external nasal valve in order to determine whether they are aspects of a revision rhinoplasty that will improve breathing during surgery.

The status of your breathing is a key component during initial consultation with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a Los Angeles cosmetic plastic surgeon specializing in rhinoplasty, septoplasty and revision rhinoplasty surgery.  Dr. Karamanoukian will assess key features of your nasal proportion and also perform an internal nasal examination in order to gage functional breathing.

It is also important to discuss whether you have a history of poor sleep, sleep apnea, or snoring that may be a direct manifestation of breathing problems.  Dr. Karamanoukian performs cosmetic plastic surgery in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills and is specialist in revision rhinoplasty surgery.

During your consultation, he will advise you on a surgical plan that addresses cosmetic features of the nose as well as medical breathing problems.  Dr. Karamanoukian also perform all aspects of cosmetic facial surgery including brow lift, face lift, neck lift, mini neck lift, fractional CO2 laser resurfacing, septoplasty, rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty.  If you have questions about rhinoplasty surgery or revision rhinoplasty surgery to correct nasal breathing problems, please call our Los Angeles plastic surgery patient care coordinator at 310-998-5533.

How soon after my original rhinoplasty surgery can I have a revision? - Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian

Timing a revision rhinoplasty procedure after swelling has decreased?

The telltale manifestation of an initial rhinoplasty is the mild swelling that may persist for up to one year after nasal surgery. This swelling and nasal cartilage and scar tissue remodeling is a key feature when planning a revision rhinoplasty surgery.  In practice, plastic surgeons will tend to wait approximately nine months to one year after initial rhinoplasty surgery in order to schedule a revision rhinoplasty.  The complexity of the initial problem will determine the exact length of time before proceeding to a revision rhinoplasty.  Much of the timeliness of the revision depends on the complexity of the problem that needs to be corrected during revision rhinoplasty.  Often minor problems with the nostrils or hanging columella can be addressed in early stage as they may result from under resection or over resection of the cartilage.  These features will likely require less time from the initial rhinoplasty surgery to the revision, whereas refinement of the nasal tip may necessitate a longer period before revision.

Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a trusted expert in rhinoplasty surgery in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.  He performs complex nasal reconstruction for cosmetic improvement of the nose as well as medical improvement in breathing during revision rhinoplasty.

During your consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian, he will determine a key aspect of the nose that will need revision.  Dr. Karamanoukian will also recommend a treatment plan that incorporates cosmetic and medical features of the nose, as well as the timing of surgery after your initial rhinoplasty.  If you have questions about revision rhinoplasty surgery and how long after initial rhinoplasty before proceeding to a revision rhinoplasty, please schedule a rhinoplasty consultation with Dr. Karamanoukian to discuss your patient specific option.  Our Los Angeles plastic surgery patient care coordinator can facilitate your consultation.  The office can be reached at 310-998-5533.
