Best Treatment for Large Varicose Veins and Venous Reflux in Los Angeles - Santa Monica Vein Center

Treatment for large varicose veins begins with an ultrasound to determine the extent of venous reflux and vein incompetency along the Greater Saphenous Vein in the Leg and Thigh.  If there is documented venous insufficiency, a laser treatment known as endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) is performed, in which a small laser fiber is guided into the affected vein to eliminate the venous reflux.

Based on several studies, it is believed that the results of EVLT and endovenous ablation with laser are effective longterm.  5 year follow up showed a success rate of about 93% to 98%. Spider veins and Varicose veins information - Santa Monica Vein Center in Los Angeles

Varicose veins and spider veins are among the most common medical concerns among healthy adults.  Genetic factors, occupational factors, and level of activity can determine whether varicose veins arise on the legs and thighs.  Despite a healthy diet and lifestyle, the patients may have a genetic predisposition to develop varicose veins that cannot be eliminated with lifestyle alone.  Millions of healthy adults suffer from some type of vein problem, including spider veins, thread veins, varicose veins, and bulging veins on the legs and thighs.  These veins can cause symptoms such as achiness, leg pain, discomfort, heaviness, early muscle fatigue, swelling, and muscle cramping.

If you have problems with your legs and thighs in terms of the development of varicose veins, newer procedures can eliminate the medical problems associated with varicose veins using simple laser based and radiofreqency based options.  Laser has eliminated the need for surgery in many cases and can reduce the risk of problems to the vein circulation and can improve your overall health.  The goal of vein treatment is to improve the condition of your venous circulation, thereby reducing the number and severity of abnormal veins in the legs and thighs.  There are cosmetic and medical benefits to vein treatments and these will be discussed during an in depth consultation with Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian.

Dr. Karamanoukian is a double board certified surgeon specializing in cosmetic plastic surgery as well as vein surgery.  He is a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery as well as the American Board of Phlebology (vein surgery).  If you have questions about your veins and wish to undergo treatment for varicose veins, please call our Los Angeles vein surgery patient care coordinator at 310-998-5533.

The endovenous ablation treatment is one of the most effective nonsurgical techniques for the management of venous insufficiency and vein problems.  The patients with varicose veins and symptomatic vein disease may benefit from this minimally invasive procedure.  Unlike vein stripping that was performed in the past, endovenous ablation has minimal downtime and recovery.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a specialist in the management of varicose veins and venous insufficiency and has authored several chapters in nationally recognized publications on vein disease.  He has been featured on the popular television shows demonstrating his innovative approach to varicose veins and spider veins.

Dr. Karamanoukian also specializes in endovenous ablation and performs both EVLT and VNUS procedures.  Treatments with EVLT are performed in an outpatient accredited operating room under local anesthesia.  A small amount of local anesthetic is used to harmlessly anesthetize the area around the vein in order to effectively eliminate the venous reflux and safely collapse the unwanted and ineffective vein in the leg.  If you have questions about venous insufficiency and varicose veins, a consultation regarding EVLT and endovenous ablation can be made with Dr. Karamanoukian in his Los Angeles office.

EVLT procedure require only local anesthesia, and if necessary the patient may request a prescription medication to reduce anxiety during the procedure.  All efforts will be made to eliminate and decrease the discomfort experienced during the procedure.  However most patients will report that the endovenous ablation is relatively painless with minimal recovery.  If you have questions about varicose vein treatment, please call our Los Angeles office at 310-998-5533.  Our vein surgery patient care coordinator can facilitate your consultation request and help you schedule your treatment for vein problems.  Please call 310-998-5533.

What are varicose veins?

Unwanted veins in the legs and thighs are often characterized as spider veins or varicose veins.  These veins are often unsightly and can cause medical problem if left untreated.  Varicose veins are usually the bulging bluish or purplish veins that arise from the skin on the legs and thighs.  The bulging veins often represent dilated or severely extended veins that not only cause discomfort, but press against the skin and cause a bulgy and twisted change along the skin surface.  These veins have often lost their ability to pump blood back to the heart and this impairment in normal circulation can often have a long term consequence.  Varicose veins can have direct cosmetic effect on the legs and thighs, but can also begin to have medical effect as they begin to impair the normal circulatory system in the arteries and veins.  Most patients will often notice a change in the cosmetic appearance of their leg over a long period of time, followed by progressive achiness, early fatigue, heaviness, cramping, itching, and burning along the areas of veins.

Tenderness is an uncommon finding often associated with inflamed veins.  Once the varicose veins begin to dilate and progress, they often affect the surrounding veins and arteries, causing a progressive enlargement in the abnormal venous complex surrounding the areas of the leg.  Most varicose veins are asymptomatic however, with the patient noting symptoms in the late stage of venous disease.  The first in evaluating your varicose veins is determining whether they are in fact abnormal veins.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian is a board certified plastic surgeon and a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Phlebology (vein surgery).  He performs outpatient cosmetic surgery and outpatient vein treatments in his two Los Angeles offices that are dedicated to plastic surgery and vein surgery.

Please call our Los Angeles vein surgery patient care coordinator who can schedule a consultation and answer basic questions about varicose vein treatment.  Dr. Karamanoukian has been featured on multiple occasions on nationally televised shows demonstrating his unique approach to nonsurgical and outpatient varicose vein treatment.  Our office can be reached at 310-998-5533.
