The use of compression stockings for varicose veins, Santa Monica Vein Center

Not every patient with spider and varicose veins will need to undergo treatment with laser, injection sclerotherapy, or surgery.  There are many noninvasive methods for the management of spider and varicose veins.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian, a board certified vein surgeon and expert in varicose veins, advocates the use of compression stockings in patients who do not require or request treatment for their vein problems.  Compression stockings provide controlled and gradient compression of the superficial surface of the legs and thighs, thus controlling the amount of dilation of the varicose vein.  These stockings come in a variety of compression pressures and often provide relief for patients who have discomfort associated with their veins.  Discomfort may include itching, burning, pain, throbbing, cramping, restless legs, and generalized leg discomfort.

What causes varicose veins? Santa Monica Vein Center; Raffy Karamanoukian

What causes varicose veins?

One of the most common reasons to develop painful varicose veins is a condition known as valvular damage.  In this condition, the direction of blood flow in the vein is disrupted and the circulation is less efficient.  This condition makes it harder for the circulatory system to direct blood in and out of your legs and thighs.  The overall insufficiency of the venous circulation can cause dilation and bulging of varicose veins and lead to a condition known as venous reflux.  During your consultation, a Doppler ultrasound probe is used to painlessly examine the direction of flow and the size of your deeper varicose veins.  Ultrasound is quick and noninvasive and can provide important answers for the future management of varicose veins.

Most ultrasound examinations for venous reflux take about 20 to 30 minutes and can help Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian at the Santa Monica Vein Center manage your vein problems. The cost of the ultrasound examination is usually covered by medical insurance.
