In September 2012, Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian and Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian organized a surgical humanitarian trip to the Central Republic Hospital in Stepanakert, Nagorno Karabakh Republic.  Nagorno Karabakh is an independent nation that is commonly referred to as the 'Twin Armenia.' Much of the infrastructure of the hospital and the community was destroyed in the 1990s as a result of war and an economic blockade of this tiny nation by neighboring countries. During their surgical trip, Drs. Karamanoukian performed surgical procedures and donated much-needed surgical supplies to the hospital in the fields of microsurgery and vascular surgery.  Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian completed plastic surgery cases and exchanged important dialogue with his plastic surgery counterparts, including Igor Zakharyan, Chief of Plastic Surgery in at the Central Republic Hospital.  Drs. Karamanoukian also met with the President of the NKR, Bako Sahakyan and met with the Deputy Minister of Health and the Minister of Health of Karabakh.  The trip was a cornerstone in developing bilateral medical relations with NKR and establishing a vital lifeline between the medical community in Los Angeles and the NKR.
